How to make a metacourse in Moodle 2.0

I’ve seen a few queries recently on the forums of Moodle.org about how to make metacourses in Moodle 2.0 so I thought I would make a video. It works differently in 2.0 because the whole course enrolment system is different.

  1. First – metacourses have to be enabled (ie, have their eye opened) by the site administrator in Site administration>plugins>enrolment>manage enrol plugins.
  2. Second – the teacher has to choose metacourse link as an enrolment method once they have made their course. NOTE that you don’t get the “is this a metacourse?” option as you used to in 1.9 when you create your course – that’s caused some of the confusion.
  3. Finally – once the method has been added you are then presented with a drop down from which to select the linked course you want to bring users in from. I noticed that a regular teacher doesn’t get the drop down list unless the admin gives them the capability to select courses as metalinked; after that, they can select from other courses they teach in.

  1. Many thanks for this great post, it’s something that we’re looking at as we establish ‘Key competency’ skill courses for whole of Institute use.

Keep up the good work. I’ll see you at MootAU11 too I hope.
